Russians see no point in holding early elections

March 16 2009

Representatives of the Russian opposition political parties and movements in recent times come up with slogans to dissolve the State Duma and call an early parliamentary and presidential elections. However, in societies where such proposals are not encouraging.

In mid-February, Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov said that the economic crisis could escalate into a political and, consequently, lead to the dissolution of the Duma deputies this year. With similar assumptions and requirements for early presidential and parliamentary elections were other representatives of non-system opposition, believing that the crisis is not the power to perform its functions and it should be changed.

However, despite the assurances of the opposition, most Russians do not see the need for early presidential and parliamentary elections. Such an opinion as to the results of the latest opinion poll, holds about 80% of respondents. 3% believe that the necessity of holding such elections, there is a 4% offer to hold early parliamentary elections only, only 1% - just presidential. 13% were undecided.

78% of Russians believe that early elections will not change anything, 81% believe that early elections would require the state a lot of effort, time and money, and use in combating the crisis of this does not increase.

In fact, the position of the Russians in regard to the question about the possibility of early elections has not changed compared to last year.

In December 2008, the Levada Center poll published data on the population for early presidential elections in Russia. Only 15% of Russians would support a solution to the current head of state ahead of time to resign. 65% of treated abruptly or rather negatively to such a term.

According to the deputy director of the Levada Center, "Alexei Grazhdankina, the Russians have opposed early elections, because they want to live by the rules and do not like when they change.

Thus, for the parties of the parliamentary type (KPRF, LDPR) statements about upcoming early elections is an attempt to rehabilitate himself for past failures and to attract the attention of voters and potential supporters, including the business community. Non-systemic opposition, in turn, relies on the possibility of destabilizing the political situation in the country where it is today does not have proper support from the community.
