Death, oil and "secret agents of the Kremlin"

March 9 2007

"The Russian tycoon feared for his life." "The businessman-immigrant fears the attack agents Putin." "Putin is preparing elimination Nevzlin in Israel." These were the headlines were full yesterday, the Israeli media sites, stories about the terrible fate of the former co-owner of Yukos, Leonid Nevzlin.

Origin is made by the Israeli newspaper Maariv, which, referring to the information received from the guard Nevzlin, reported that in recent weeks, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) is actively trying to get close to him and his two partners, to gather information that can be used for physical removal. According to the publication to learn about the villainous plans of the Russian secret services, Nevzlin moved protection mode of combat readiness, not forgetting to notify the press. Journalists, not delaying the matter under the carpet, immediately linked statement Nevzlin with the murder of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko , journalist Anna Politkovskaya , and even death correspondent for Kommersant, died under rather mysterious circumstances, and the blame for the death which, as in First duvuh cases, immediately put on Putin.

Nevzlin, unlike his partner, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, is serving his term in Krasnokamensk colony fairly well settled in Israel. From time to time, of course, disturbed, and the Russian Prosecutor General's Office, directing requests to the Israeli government to extradite Nevzlin, and local human rights activists, in turn, attacking with a demand to rid the land of promise from the offender, who is accused of committing certain particularly serious crimes , including and organizing contract murders, but the money did their work and Nevzlin, in general, felt quite comfortable.

Sole restraint on the inheritance of Mikhail Khodorkovsky, Nevzlin not only provided a solid rear in Israel, suddenly became one of the most generous patrons and benefactors, but also tried to expand their own business.

In late February, Nevzlin owned Israeli company "Israel Petrochemical" bought 11,5% of the Haifa refinery. Assistant exiled Russian oligarch, Eric Wolf, responding to a question about possible opposition from political opponents Nevzlin, said: "I am not aware of any obstacles from the Israeli secret services."

From the intelligence Nevzlin and Co., perhaps, and there was nothing to fear, but business colleagues, and participating in the privatization of the oil giant, fearing the cost. On the first day after release on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange quotations Haifa refinery (baseline) collapsed by 15%, resulting in financial group Ofer-Federman, who managed to buy 46% stake in oil refinery, lost in the transaction to $ 100 million. As the saying goes, who does not happen. In business from the highs and lows no one is immune. Except in cases where the perpetrator is known financial disasters.

Financial analysts, analyzing the reasons for such a sharp drop in stock price, suggested that at least indirectly responsible for the crash became a fugitive Russian businessman, whose reputation has been considerably raised questions not only in Russia but also in Israel. Style of doing business in Russia, Leonid Nevzlin not changed since its relocation to the "historic homeland. Thus, the Israeli human rights activists have asked several times about how the Russian citizen, who arrived in Israel as a tourist, in a fairly short time, an Israeli passport, bypassing the mandatory procedures such as, for example, obtaining residency rights.

Needless to say, after it became known that Nevzlin became co-Haifa oil refinery, many have doubts about the purity of accomplished transactions that may have caused the fall of the stock price. And after the Office of Securities launched an investigation into all circumstances of the incident, serious question arose about the cancellation of the results of the competition. Naturally, in this case the losses of shareholders will be calculated very round numbers. It will be hard to blame the Israeli businessmen who decided to settle with Nevzlin non-traditional business civilized way.

Apparently, after learning about the danger threatening him, Mr. Nevzlin decided once again to translate all the political track , claiming he was in danger from the "agents of the Kremlin." After that, apparently, he might require and additional protection from the state, and declare himself a victim of political repression, etc, etc.

This tactic, however, is widely used by domestic businessmen from the opposition: as soon as their dark deeds are beginning to be interested in law enforcement, as immediately followed by statements of political persecution. We can say that in this way the business has found another way to circumvent the legislation. And this is political cover may allow the Russian opposition to enter into contracts with small, medium and large businesses.
