Won Solidarity - the army lawlessness knows no bounds

June 22 2005

When viewing a news feed, both Russian and Western media over the past week and a half, one might get the impression that the army at the legions of different countries found the plague. The military count the injured and the dead and speak with one voice about the serious problems and, above all, hazing in the barracks.

It all started as usual with Russia. The Main Military Prosecutor's Office reported that over the past week as a result of various forms of crime, delinquency and accidents killed 46 servicemen . In this case, eight people have committed suicide, the other two were going to do the same. However, it should probably rejoice that a shocking scandal, as it is now generally classified as in Saratov two months ago was found dead just four conscripts, remains unsurpassed.

If we turn to the recent past, then, according to the chief military prosecutor in the lists of "dead souls" of the Armed Forces over the past year the number of 246, committed suicide.

Needless to say, that such unfavorable reports do nothing to strengthen confidence in the army among the population.

Nevertheless, earlier this week the fate of mercy on Sergei Ivanov, and palm suddenly turned to Yoon Kwang Una - a colleague from South Korea. However, the very government of the country, it seemed, was discouraged not less than the others. Especially since the incident occurred, according to some estimates, one of the most dangerous parts of the border with North Korea.

We recall that on Sunday one of the soldiers, being on the line of duty, opened fire on sleeping colleagues. As a result, eight people were killed. As it turned out, the reason to be shot were all the same hazing - hard to believe that a commonplace insult led to this result.

For what happened (not like Russia) The Minister of Defense may pay epaulets and a career. Steering power to think seriously about the morale and health of military personnel - the country did not know of such outbreaks, starting in 2000.

Finally, a few days in the German military, seyavshih violence and hazing practiced in the training bases of the Bundeswehr ( previously reported similar problems in the UK), was set point. Or rather, the dots - the scandal will be remembered for a long time, considering that the problem of bullying remains intractable.

In the case of Germany's curiosity caused two facts. Firstly, for the Bundeswehr in general is not characterized by such shocks - is probably why, in one of the German editions of hazing was described as a phenomenon, and in the other - "a game of cowboys and Indians." Secondly, from the outset scandal, which began talking last year, the views were again turned to the "Guanatnamo Bay" , where George W. Bush, among other things, beckoning now the general public - to make sure that prisoners and the Quran is all right .

The fact that U.S. guards have inspired not only artists from Colombia, Fernando Botero (Botero), which is for the edification of a series of works devoted to the torture of prisoners. Impressionable German soldiers could wound on the condition and deal with physical abuse, looking at their American counterparts. All the only difference is that the object of torture became the recruits who have just joined the ranks of the Armed Forces.

result before the court brought 18 soldiers of German Armed Forces, participated in the harassment of more than 160 recruits, using electric shocks and other methods have been tested on an American military base in Guantanamo Bay.

It is worth considering that while the German Defense Minister Peter Struck said that "the German soldiers do not anybody trying to" one of the instructors training schools administered by the Defense Minister, defended torture as an effective tool in the war against terrorism .... This intifada, as can be seen, because of certain characteristics is increasingly becoming a convenient excuse for all sorts of initiatives.
