Influenza vaccine will be given without injections

January 31 2008

South Korean scientists have proposed to abandon the traditional injectable flu vaccine, replacing them with her technique under the tongue. Conducted their experiments on animals have shown that this method of vaccine administration is not only devoid of unpleasant side effects, but also superior to traditional injections of efficiency.

Scientists from Seoul National University injected mice living under the tongue and killed influenza vaccine. A few weeks later the animals were given inhaled concentration of potentially deadly flu virus.

According to the head of research Cecil Cherkinskaya, all mice were protected against the virus. Moreover, introduced under the tongue vaccine stimulated not only the general immunity (caused the formation of protective antibodies in the blood) as an injectable vaccine, but also provided the local protective action (led to the formation of antibodies in the airway). The latter is especially important for disease prevention at the earliest stages, since flu viruses enter the body is through inhalation, said Cherkinskaya.

The introduction of the vaccine under the tongue eliminates the need for painful injections, and protects against complications such as inflammation at the injection site. In addition, this method allows immunization to more people, especially in remote areas, and does not require the presence of health professionals reported MedNovosti.
