Wine from Europe, too, may be banned

May 29 2006

Russian authorities will prevent the import of low-quality alcohol, not only from Georgia and Moldova, but also from other countries, including those from Europe. This was stated by the head of Rospotrebnadzor Russia Gennady Onishchenko.

According to him, the rules and phytosanitary standards are the same for all suppliers of wine to the Russian market, and no exceptions will be made for anyone. If it is found that goods from Europe does not meet the standards, then imports from countries complying can be completely banned.

"Such activities extend to inferior wines from Germany, Spain, Portugal and France - said Onishchenko.

According to Onishchenko, among other challenges ahead - to find and confiscate the wine materials from which the territory of Russia is surrogacy wine.

"Of particular concern for the State Sanitary Inspectorate is the identification and removal from circulation of so-called wine, imported into our country in nebutilirovannom form and in drums and other containers," - said the chief health officer of Russia.

Onishchenko stressed that the withdrawal from circulation of the "products" in coming days will be taken "drastic measures", informs " Interfax ".
