Favorite music helps to recover after a stroke

February 21 2008

Finnish researchers found that daily listening to music improves the condition of stroke patients. In this genre of music has no value.

The study included 60 patients who were hospitalized after a stroke. One-third of patients were the control group - they were a traditional therapy. Another third have chosen favorite musical genre and have been for a month at least an hour a day listening to music in this direction. The choice were presented to the popular, classical music, jazz and folk. The remaining participants were offered the same conditions to listen to audiobooks.
Three months later, it was found that the "musical" group memory is improved by an average of 60%, while the band, listen to audio books, the figure was 18%, while the control group - 29%. But the ability to concentrate has improved only in patients who listened to music, the researchers note. In addition, the "musical" group was less susceptible to depressive mood. Teppo Saarkamo from Helsinki University and his colleagues believe that the combination of speech and music plays an important role in the rehabilitation of patients, since the vast majority of the selected music included singing.
What exactly caused this effect, researchers have not yet established. Apparently, listening to music activates different brain regions that respond including a concentration of attention, speech and memory processes, reports SNews.
