Doctors can predict schizophrenia

December 13 2006

Scottish researchers have found that brain scans can show the risk to get schizophrenia.

A team of researchers from Edinburgh used a technique of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which showed changes in the gray matter of the brain in a small group of participants in the experiment before the first symptoms appeared.

Within ten years, scientists tested 65 young people with a predisposition to schizophrenia, in which two or more family members were diagnosed.

Researchers have searched for changes in the gray matter of the brain - the tissue consisting of neurons, which transmit the signal to the brain and help to keep memories.

Eight of the 65 participants in the experiment developed schizophrenia within 2-3 years after the start of the experiment. MRI analysis of each of these eight people have shown the presence of changes in the gray matter of the brain.

Researchers believe that the data obtained will help to predict a severe mental illness in the early stages of development, reports membrane.
