Fly to fight diabetes

June 13 2006

Researchers from the University of Rochester have created a fly, Drosophila, which may help in the fight against diabetes.

Fly, created through genetic engineering, more additives genetic marker known as JNK, live 40% longer than usual (85 days instead of 60).

The reason for this is: a man (and fly) physical aging, in particular due to the fact that their body is attacked by free radicals, which just hit the vital proteins and DNA.

The most common cause of the beginning of such attacks is stress. JNK opposes free radicals and helps to minimize damage. In addition, as it turned out, JNK positive impact on physiological processes associated with diabetes - it is assumed that it can increase the hormone insulin.

Experiments on Long-lived Drosophila can provide new tools to combat the disease, reports CNN .
