The British have learned to treat autism
British scientists claim that the symptoms of severe mental disorder similar to autism, are reversible.
A team from the University of Edinburgh has made to the symptoms associated with autism, Rett syndrome n disappeared in laboratory mice. To do this, scientists had to activate only one gene.
Until now it was thought that the symptoms of the disease that affects mainly girls, are irreversible. A child may be permanently silenced, he violated the intellectual and the ability and motor function. Acquired by birth the disease becomes noticeable mainly in the second year of life.
Scientists have studied the gene MECP2, responsible for development of the disorder. When this gene was activated in mice born with the "inactive" MECP2, such symptoms as respiratory failure and mobility, disappeared. A few weeks later, mice that have been activated by the gene MECP2, did not differ from their healthy counterparts.
Scientists consider this discovery a breakthrough in the treatment of auticheskih disorders.
"Let the work in this direction are still at an early stage, this discovery gives hope to those families who are affected by this disaster - said Chris James, head of the British Association for Rett syndrome research, reports the BBC.
