Scientists have found a way to keep alcoholics from drinking with pleasure

June 10 2008

Scientists from the University of California have discovered a fast a substance that can reduce the level of alcohol consumption and preventing relapse.

Researchers report that the protein GDNF (glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor), required to run the growth of ancillary brain cells, removes the pleasure of rats consuming alcohol and prevent alcohol relapse behavior. Sebastian Karnichella and his colleagues at the University of California at San Francisco have shown that when administered GDNF in one of the regions of rat brain, the desire to seek alcohol animals is greatly reduced within ten minutes after the injection. The authors showed that rats in the experiment, which could independently control the frequency of alcohol use (10% solution of ethyl alcohol), after injections of GDNF used it less often. In addition, after two weeks of forced abstinence from alcohol they do not relapse of alcoholic behavior - even in cases where alcohol was easily available. The researchers note that injection of GDNF does not preclude the possibility of experimental animals feel pleasure at all. In particular, it does not affect the pleasure from eating sugar. They also indicate that GDNF has no effect in those cases when it is introduced into the neighboring region of the brain.

According to the authors, this protein may play a fundamental role in blocking alcohol dependence. Because alcohol dependence in rats and humans formed similar ways, scientists believe that the substance - a potential candidate for a cure for alcoholism in humans, RIA-Novosti.
