Harvard starts cloning human embryos

June 8 2006

In the most famous American university - Harvard - begin work on cloning human embryos for medical purposes. Researchers hope that they can find treatments for serious diseases, particularly diabetes.

Scientists plan to clone embryos using cells of sick people, and then from the cloned embryos to obtain stem cells that can grow adult cells that mimic the disease. And these stem cells can be used to develop new treatments. The project will focus on diabetes, motor neuron disease and blood diseases.

Note that the Bush administration is engaged in the UN campaign for a worldwide ban on human cloning - both for reproduction and for developing therapies. In the U.S., banned federal funding for experiments with stem cells, which were obtained after 2001, so the work of scientists from Harvard funded by private foundations. At the same time to his work on therapeutic cloning, the university received the approval of ethical committee.

This is one of the first projects for therapeutic cloning, started after it emerged that a scientist from South Korea has falsified his data, wrote the Times.
