The correct reading helps lose weight

October 6 2008

Results of the study conducted by U.S. scientists show that well-chosen reading promotes weight loss in obese adolescents.

Scientists asked a group of girls aged 9 to 13 years who are obese and are already involved in a weight loss program, read one of a series of novels about teenagers, written by Annie Bryant (Annie Bryant). With the help of specialist pediatricians in the text were introduced positive in terms of healthy life role models, and also included advice on weight management.

Six months later, researchers found that 31 girls, read novels, showed significant reduction in body mass index (-0.71%), while 14 girls from the control group showed an increase in the index opposite to 0,5%, said Dr. Alexander Russell (Alexandra Russell), who led the study, which presented him at the annual meeting of the Society to combat obesity.

Her words are contained in the message Duke University.

"As a pediatrician, I can not count how many times I have recommended that parents buy the books from which they could gather useful tips, but still could not provide a study that would support my recommendation. ... This is the first study that shows that literature can have a positive impact on the lives of young girls, "- says Sarah Armstrong (Sarah Armstrong), head of health promotion programs in the clinic at Duke, where the study was conducted.

Obesity is becoming increasingly common among children, according to U.S. authorities, 16% of children aged 6 to 19 years have overweight or obese, and compared with 1980, this number has tripled. The researchers looked for different ways to help children stay healthy, lose weight and be more active, but, according to Armstrong, the majority of them did not work very well.

"Effective ways to lose weight, usually involved the use of powerful drugs that cause side effects, or required surgical intervention," - said Armstrong.

Although the reduction in body mass index associated with the book is small, Armstrong says that any even a small reduction in its very encouraging, as the index of the child usually grows as they grow and develop. However, children with overweight body mass index increases much faster.

"If the index falls, it means that they either lose weight or grow and gain weight. Both cases - enough positive indicators for children who are trying to lose weight," - she explains.
