Scientists have won flu

October 6 2006

American researchers from the University of Wisconsin said that they had created a drug able to protect the rights of all varieties of influenza virus. Also, a vaccine capable of protecting the body and from the deadly virus H5N1.

To combat the viral infection, scientists suggest using a fragment of the protein complex that regulates the transit of complex organic compounds across cell membranes. Although the mechanism of protective action of this substance has not been fully studied, experiments have shown that it has the ability to completely block the entry of viruses into cells.

In laboratory tests a new drug was tested on cultures grown in vitro animal and human cells, as well as in mice, which were infected with different varieties of influenza virus, including the deadly bird flu virus H5N1.

All the animals received the experimental drug at the early stages of infection, recovered. Without treatment, they died within a few days. According to study co-author Dr. Curtis Brandt, in contrast to the now existing antiviral drugs and vaccines, new drug setback "to an entirely new phase of the life cycle of the virus."

"The virus simply can not penetrate into the cell, the peptide is blocking the very earliest stage of infection," - said Dr. Brandt. Before we proceed to clinical trials of new drugs, developers have to do the painstaking work to determine the optimal dose and to confirm its safety for patients, transmit medportal .
