Mosquitoes threaten Chinese dangerous virus

December 1 2008

Among the inhabitants of China on the eve of World AIDS Day conducted a poll which showed that the Chinese believe in all sorts of myths about HIV.

For example, about 50% of respondents believe that they can catch HIV from a mosquito bite. One in five respondents believe that the virus is transmitted by airborne droplets. Four out of five respondents admitted that they never tried to find any information about AIDS.

Lack of awareness of the peasants about the disease poses a serious threat to the spread of HIV in urban areas - there accumulates a huge number of migrant workers. Suffice it to say that in 2008 in Beijing from 5600 people infected with human immunodeficiency virus, 75% are immigrants from the villages.

According to recent statistics, to date in China with HIV have been registered 264 thousand inhabitants, of whom 78,000 diagnosed human immunodeficiency syndrome, nearly 35,000 died of the disease, informs RIA Novosti news agency .
