Suicide bomber killed in Afghanistan British troops

Three British soldiers were killed Sunday in southern Afghanistan in an attack by a suicide bomber, reported Agence France-Presse, citing the Ministry of Defence. The attack happened during a routine patrol in Helmand province, where the deployed most of the British contingent in Afghanistan. Thus, the number of British servicemen killed in Afghanistan since the start of international operations in 2001 to one hundred people.

Currently, operations in Afghanistan carried out under the overall leadership of NATO, are involved forming a multinational counter-terrorist group under the command of the NATO members of the armed forces of the United States, as well as parts and units of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan (International Security Assistance Force, ISAF). The main task of counter-terrorist group is conducting operations to search and destroy illegal armed formations, including militants of the radical Taliban and international terrorist group al-Qaeda.

In turn, the main task of ISAF forces is to maintain security in areas already cleared of militant groups. In addition, in the ISAF includes so-called provincial reconstruction teams (Provincial Reconstruction Teams, PRT) designed to restore the infrastructure. The reason for the beginning of U.S. operations and its allies in Afghanistan served as a terrorist attack by militants of Al Qaeda on Sept. 11, 2001 in New York, when with the help of two captured terrorists passenger planes were destroyed World Trade Center towers, according to RIA News .
