Cuban authorities decided to lift the ban for the population of the Caribbean nation to buy the local specialty stores electronic equipment, including computers. The corresponding resolution was the first during the reign of the new head of Cuba's Raul Castro.

In accordance with the resolution numbered 43/08, from April 1, Cubans will be able to freely buy computers, VCRs, televisions, microwave ovens, bicycles with electric motors and similar equipment. At the same time, the document notes that these products will be marketed "gradually" to the extent of their procurement specialist firms and in the ongoing government programs to save energy.

Previously, the right to purchase electronic and household appliances in specialized stores in Cuba had only a staff of diplomatic missions, local and foreign companies and government agencies. This rule was established in 2003 pursuant to resolution 222, in two articles which are now changed.

According to Raul Castro, after his election to the presidency, the first priority of the Government of Cuba in the near future will permit "the most urgent problems" of the population. He also pointed out that before long the country will be taken to undo "excessive restrictions" that do more harm than good, ITAR-TASS.
