The Bolivian Government has declared Tuesday a national emergency due to floods that have killed 23 people. The number of victims has reached 20 thousand

Seven of the nine departments of Bolivia cover floods caused by incessant torrential rains, which are often accompanied by snow and hail. To date, the material damage is estimated at $ 30 million. In addition, the damage has been done about 10 thousand hectares of crops. Last week, the Ministry of Health has warned about the threat of outbreaks of dangerous diseases such as malaria, yellow fever and dengue.

The authorities are assisting the people affected by floods by handing out food and essential goods.

The culprit was the welter natural phenomenon La Niña, which is an abnormal lowering of water temperatures in the eastern Pacific Ocean. It replaced its antipode - the warm El Niño. Both of them are just different stages of the same phenomenon, which is responsible for environmental disasters - droughts or prolonged heavy rains, leading to flooding.

Thus, from January to March last year, floods caused by El Niño, killed 56 people. The number of victims has reached 600 thousand people then. The damage was estimated at half a million dollars, said Look.
