Monument getmamu Mazeppa put in place the Battle of Poltava

Hetman Ivan Mazepa was in 1687 with the support of Prince Vasily Golitsyn, later enjoyed the location of Tsar Peter I. However, during the Northern War, he was on the side of Sweden, received in exchange for recognition of independence of Ukraine from Russia. After the defeat of the Swedish army near Poltava in 1709, Mazeppa, along with Charles XII fled into the possession of the Sultan of Turkey, where he soon died. In Russia, Mazeppa is considered a traitor, and Ukrainian nationalists consider him a fighter for independence.
