Hungry former president of Taiwan requires its release

Arrested for bribery and money laundering, former Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian, announced a hunger strike to protest his detention.

The lawyer of ex-president visited on Thursday morning, his client in jail, after which said that Chen Shui-bian has not eaten for more than 24 hours, and intends to continue his hunger strike. He protests against the death of justice and the decline of democracy.

Chen Shui-bian has long been the leader of Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party. His arrest came six months after the Progressive Democrats have handed the reins of power on the island rival Kuomintang, reports RIA Novosti .
