Former Spanish dictator denied an honorary doctorate

The late Spanish dictator Francisco Franco had lost on Friday, 10 November, an honorary doctorate from the University of Santiago de Compostela, said a representative of this institution.

"The Governing Council of the University of Santiago de Compostela has decided to deny the title of Doctor" Honoris Causa "of the fascist dictator Franco, given to him July 27, 1965, because his personality does not match a similar title," - said a school representative.

Franco came to power in 1939 by a military rebellion against the democratic government and a three-year civil war, victory in which he won with the help of Hitler and Mussolini.

Totalitarian regime of the fascist type, which claimed at least two million Spaniards, lasted until the dictator's death Nov. 20, 1975.
