Libya's Supreme Court on Wednesday will announce the final verdict on appeal of five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor sentenced to death for allegedly infecting more than 400 children with HIV.

As RIA Novosti reported with reference to the Arab media during the last court hearing, held on 20 June, the prosecutor requested to retain the previously imposed on the defendant to death. Lawyers doctors filed a final opportunity to appeal to the Supreme Court on February 17 this year. Defenders are hoping to change the harsh verdict, once again rendered the defendants on December 19 last year.

In 1999, five Bulgarian nurses and Palestinian doctor detained in Libya on charges of deliberately infecting Libyan children with HIV. In 2004, the trial court sentenced defendants to death. Convicted filed an appeal demanding a retrial. Doctors argued that innocent and that they were tortured to extract confessions. The trial of nine policemen who were accused of torturing prisoners Bulgarian nationals, held June 7, 2005. All were acquitted.

Libya's Supreme Court on Dec. 25, 2005 upheld the appeal filed by lawyers of Bulgarian medics and acquitted before medics sentenced to death. The court also decided to appoint a new trial on the case. The Supreme Court of Appeal of Tripoli on December 19 last year, confirmed the death sentence against the accused in 2004.

If the court of last resort to confirm the verdict of the lower courts, the Bulgarian citizens, who have spent behind bars for nearly eight years will be a chance for a pardon by the Supreme Council of Justice of Libya - the last of the court, where else can change the fate of those sentenced to death.

Relatives of the infected children in Benghazi require execution. They claim that over time, while stretching the story to its execution, had died more than 50 AIDS cases of children.
