In Spain, the bulls are running

July 8 2007

In the city of Pamplona severoispanskoy Navarre yesterday began the annual "enserro - races in which the bulls pursued fleeing people into the streets.

At eight in the morning local time, thousands of "runners" - mostly young men - have begun the first, most popular in this year's race by a narrow, pre-fenced streets of Pamplona.

According to the Red Cross, the first race was not without injuries - a young man struck a bull horn in the abdomen and another suffered a concussion during a fall. Several other people received minor sprains. Traditionally, the races are held from 7 to 14 July - in the days of San Fermin, which is considered the patron saint of Navarra. Angry bulls let out of the pen in the old part of town where they have their own run of about 850 m to the arenas where bullfights will be held in the evening with their own participation. The whole path is a little over two minutes.

It is believed that the most dangerous part of the way for running - the last 280 meters in front of the arena is an open area where people simply have nowhere to hide from his pursuers. In this case, by the rules "enserro, fend off the animals can only be folded newspaper.

This "closeness" to the bulls, weighing not less than half a ton, usually leads to the fact that after each race a few people who could not avoid a direct confrontation with the animals, forced to seek medical help.

The most "bloody" was the celebration of San Fermin in 1924 - then under the hooves of an angry bull for eight days, killing 13 and wounding more than 200 people.

The annual races are held in 1591 in the days of San Fermin. However, as noted on the official website dedicated to this holiday, a religious component in those days are long faded into the background, giving way in the first place, spectacular "enserro, who come to look at not only the Spaniards, but also many foreigners, reports RIA Novosti news agency.
