For 8 months of 2008 killed nearly 1500 civilians in Afghanistan

September 16 2008

Records of the United Nations reported that during the first eight months of 2008 killed 1,445 Afghan civilians. This is a 39% increase over the previous year. The most "bloody" month was August: during this period were killed 330 civilians, 92 of whom were victims of the bombing of Afghan forces and international troops in Shindand District, located on the west.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay expressed great concern with these data, which include people killed in Taliban attacks, as well as combat operations, Afghan forces and international coalition forces. "It's the largest number of civilians killed in one month since the end of confrontation and fall of the Taliban regime in late 2001," - said Pillay in the communique, commenting on the details of those who died in August.
