Pope wants to canonize his predecessor

Pope Benedict XVI paid tribute to his predecessor John Paul II, yesterday visited the Polish city of Wadowice, the birthplace of the late pontiff. He also joined his voice to the call of citizens canonised their compatriot.

A large banner with an inscription in Italian and Polish "Wadowice pray for the immediate canonization of John Paul II the Great," was posted on the densely crowded with people square in front of the church, which was once christened the future head of the Roman Catholic Church. The current pontiff said that he fully agrees with this appeal.

"Making the pilgrimage in his footsteps, I could not ignore the Wadowice," - said the Pope, speaking to more than 30 thousands gathered outside the church.
"I wanted to stay in this place, where was born and strengthened his belief that together with you to ask about his early elevation" - said Benedict XVI. He also expressed hope that his predecessor John Paul II will be canonized in the very near future ", reports Reuters .
