Tomorrow begins the Orthodox Christmas Fast

On Tuesday, Nov. 28, Orthodox believers begin the Christmas post, which will end January 7 - the feast of the Nativity.

Popularly referred to as Christmas fast Filippov, since Nov. 27 the Russian Orthodox Church celebrates the day of the apostle Philip.

The main purpose of fasting, set back in the early centuries of Christianity, is a spiritual purification of man. Post a refusal not only Lenten food, but also from all sinful thoughts, destructive passions and habits, in order to be able to meet with a pure heart festival of Christmas.

Christmas fast in comparison with Lent is considered a non-strict. If you do not happen to any holiday, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday relies plant foods without cooking oil, and on Tuesday and Thursday - with vegetable oil, in the same Saturday and Sunday, until January 2, it is added to the fish. Allowed to fish in the big holidays - Introduction of Mary (4 December), St. Nicholas Day (December 19), as well as in the days of remembrance of some of the saints - the apostles Matthew (November 29), Andrew (December 13) and Prince Alexander Nevsky (December 6). In the last week before Christmas is simple severity increases. Maximum strict fast falls on Christmas Eve - January 6. Tells Interfax
