Today, Orthodox Christians celebrate Candlemas

February 15 2007

On this day the Russian Orthodox Church celebrates one of the great Twelve Holy Days - Presentation of the Lord. This celebration is set to the memory of how the infant Jesus on the fortieth day after birth was brought into the temple of Jerusalem that, according to custom, "to present themselves before the LORD."

According to legend, the temple of Christ went to his parents a pious man named Simeon, who had predicted that he would not die until then, until he sees the Saviour of the world. The righteous man picked up the baby and said: "Now let go of thy servant, O Lord, at thy word in peace: for mine eyes have seen thy salvation ..."

Christians accept this biblical episode especially - as an encounter with God. It is believed that in the person of Simeon the Old Testament came to pay homage, which showed a Jesus.
