Pope Benedict XVI celebrated an evening liturgy on the eve of the legendary Notre Dame - Notre-Dame de Paris. The pontiff makes his first apostolic visit to France and to greet him at the ancient walls of a Gothic cathedral came to about 40 thousand people. Pope's sermon was broadcast on huge screens.

In his speech, the pontiff stressed the important role of religion in modern society. Benedict XVI reminded that religion is at the heart of European culture. "Extremely positivist culture", in his opinion, would be a "capitulation of reason." The head of the Roman Catholic Church also warned against the "fanatic fundamentalism". According to Benedict XVI, «if today's European culture will be understood by the complete lack of restrictions on freedom, it will inevitably lead to fanaticism and lawlessness.

At the end of his speech at the College of Bernardine Pope greeted those present in the hall of the Muslim community, as he had previously met with representatives of the Jewish community. Also prior to worship the pope spoke at the College of Bernardin before nearly 700 members of the political and cultural elite of the country, among whom were former French President Jacques Chirac and Valery Giscard d'Estaing, broadcast on Vesti.
