On Thursday in India's presidential elections. Parliamentarians have to choose between two candidates - 72-year-old former Governor of Rajasthan Pratibha Patil, 83-year-old vice president Bhaironom Singh Shekhawat.

The incumbent president of India 75-year-old Abdul Kalam, popularly known as the "father of Indian missile and space program, is leaving his post after the election.

Members of the Electoral College, which includes members of parliament and state legislatures, choose the president of India for five years. The head of state is the guarantor of the observance of democratic norms and defines the strategic course of development of the state.

Results of voting in the election the 13th President of India will be announced on July 21, reports RIA Novosti .
