The Kosovo parliament on February 17 in unilaterally announced its withdrawal of Kosovo from Serbia, by adopting the Declaration of Independence. This decision recognized the United States and several EU countries.

Russia considered a unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo in violation of international law. In turn, the head of the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, replying to RIA Novosti, expressed gratitude to Russia for its firm stance on the issue of Kosovo and noted that the chairmanship of Russia in the UN Security Council is much easier for Serbia to defend its views on the illegality of a unilateral declaration of independence of Pristina. "Russia's position of principle and it is based on international law, which excludes the possibility of rejection of the territory of a sovereign state", - stressed the head of the Serbian diplomacy.

Jeremic urged the international community to eliminate the possibility of placing the EU mission in Kosovo, pointing out that Belgrade for its part operates in accordance with international legal norms: "It is very important that we stay within the framework of international law, under the existing UN Security Council resolution 1244 ( supporting Serbia's territorial integrity and its sovereignty over Kosovo), which clearly defines the format of international presence in Kosovo. " "The only legitimate international presence there - it's the UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK). You can not seriously talk about any other version of the international civil presence, which would have been without sufficient grounds located in the province in violation of Security Council decisions," - said the Serbian Minister.
