UN and OSCE have reflected on their role in the Caucasus
In connection with the August conflict in South Ossetia, the OSCE and the UN may reconsider its role in the Caucasus region. On this five months after the Georgian aggression, said UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's message to participants of the meeting of foreign ministers of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Helsinki.
"Following the tragic fighting in Georgia and the South Caucasus in August and in view of ongoing instability in the region, we can redefine our role," - says the message of Secretary General. "This conflict has also demonstrated that the absence of a meaningful political process over a long period can lead to conflict. When considering all protracted conflicts in the OSCE area should remember this lesson "- the document says.
In the Finnish capital in the OSCE hosted a meeting of more than fifty foreign ministers, whose purpose - to discuss future security architecture in Europe. Russia was represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, RBC reports.
