Penguins prefer minefields

Thousands of birds and waterfowl are the most attractive places for their nests minefields in the Falkland Islands, where, according to the British, the land is about 25 thousand landmines laid mostly Argentine troops during the 1982 war with Britain.

Fortunately, the birds weigh too little to cause the detonation of mines.

This fact is a bright spot in a gloomy mine problem. The fact that in the peat soil and shifting sands of the archipelago to make demining difficult and sometimes impossible, and therefore very large areas are still enclosed.

To date are not cleared 117 minefields, 87 of them - in the capital - Stanley, where two-thirds of the nearly three thousand population of the islands, reports Newsru.com
