Japan urged not to kill whales

New Zealand joined the 16 countries that have demanded that Japan stop the extermination of whales near Antarctica.

Member of the Cabinet of New Zealand Jim Anderton said that the country led by Brazil, have condemned the hunt whales for research purposes, which may become the victims of 935 whales for the first four months of the year.

He said that the country presented a diplomatic protest to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan on Jan. 17 and planned to file a second in the Japanese Fisheries Agency. From the Japanese government and fisheries agencies have not received any confirmation or response.

The signatories expressed their concern at the fact that Japan intends to double its annual catch of whales. "Authors of the letter believe that academic programs do not conflict with international regulations aimed at preserving populations of whales, and Japan should not kill animals to study them.
