TV viewing leads to obesity

On Tuesday, New Zealand scientists have concluded that children who regularly watch TV more than others are prone to obesity .

Researchers at the University of Otago, Bob Hancox and Poulton Ricci reported that the show "The Simpsons" , "Big Brother" and soap operas, not to affect the body weight much faster than a sedentary lifestyle and poor diet. These findings were obtained during the survey 1000 residents of the city of Dunedin New Zealand, who voluntarily agreed to participate in long-term observations. Newborns were weighed immediately after birth and then at the age of 3,5,7,9,11,13 and 15 years. Also to evaluate their social status, checked the health and diet. In addition, were monitored and their television preferences.

"After considering all other factors, it became clear that the time spent watching TV is an important sign of weight gain," - says Hancox.

Scientists worldwide are extremely concerned about the growing obesity epidemic everywhere. Television can be only one factor of hundreds. Researchers from Otago warn that if the duration of TV viewing is not reduced, then the situation can only worsen.

Just 30 years ago in New Zealand had only two channels. Today, however, in view of the satellite, home television and the Internet, children can watch TV 24 hours a day.

"Significant reduction in the duration of view can be the first step to combat childhood obesity," - says Hancox.
