Korea-Japan: "an apple of discord" - the island

For the first time in the past six years, Japan and South Korea began talks on establishing new economic zones in the border area disputed Dokdo islands.

It is expected that Japan will offer to draw a line between Dokdo and the South Korean island of Ulleungdo, since the UN convention on maritime law, coastal nations can declare an economic zone area length of 370 kilometers from their shores, where they will have exclusive rights to explore and use marine resources.

The talks will last two days, reports AP.

Note that the islands have become the subject of the dispute, are uninhabited and have no strategic value, but are the center of the fishing area, rich in fish and may have deposits of methane hydrate used to produce natural gas.
