Egyptian students will study ancient music

April 10 2006

Recruitment for the specialty "Ancient Egyptian music" started the music faculty at Helwan University, Egypt. "The main purpose of creating a new specialty - to attract the interest of young people to historical and cultural heritage of Egypt, and thus preserving ancient music" - the head of the new department professor Gaudat Al-Malt.

Previously believed that the ancient Egyptians were not "musical" recording and learning takes place directly from the teacher.

Two Italian scientists from the University of Bari - Anna Caldara and Nedim Vlora argue that the ancient Egyptians used to record music hieroglyphics that depict the heavenly bodies. Researchers believe that the system of music in Egypt originated in about 3000 years before Pythagoras invented the music notation. 12 religious hymns that were recorded in the papyri and in relief, has been restored.
