Global warming - is a refugee

November 28 2007

As a result of global warming, more than 300 million people living in coastal areas will become environmental refugees, and 1.8 billion people worldwide will be deprived of access to drinking water. Such a forecast is contained in the annual UNDP report, released today.

The document also notes that as a result of global warming on flooding could be affected 70 million people in Bangladesh, 6 million people in Egypt and 22 million people in Vietnam. The report's authors point out that climate change is already beginning to affect the poorest and most vulnerable countries and populations around the world.

They argue that the rise in average global temperature over the next decade at three degrees Celsius in the lifetime of our generation would lead to flooding, melting glaciers and massive displacements of people, as well as reduce food production. To prevent this scenario, the report's authors propose all countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80%, writes Nyusinfo.
