A new largest prime number - it has 13 million characters

September 28 2008

Mathematics, University of California, Los Angeles computed next largest prime number - from the 13th million marks. The calculation was performed using 75 computers connected to a computing cluster, at the end of last August, and now received confirmation of independent experts, use a different algorithm.

Open the number refers to the so-called "Mersenne prime", which have the form 2p - 1, where p - a prime number. For the new number p = 43112609, and in himself, to be precise, 12978189 marks. Open the number was 45-m known Mersenne prime. Interestingly, in early September, a group of researchers from the University of Cologne in Germany has opened another Mersenne prime (46th on the opening time), which, however, was less than the number found in the United States.

Significantly, this is the eighth Mersenne prime discovered in the heart of distributed computing, University of California Los Angeles. The project was supported by GIMPS (Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search), an organization that brings together over the Internet computers around the world to perform calculations needed for the search and verification of Mersenne primes.

For his discovery, project participants will receive the award - a $ 100 thousand dollars assigned for the detection of Mersenne numbers with the uniqueness of over ten million, according to the channel «Fox News».
