Elevated levels of testosterone in the blood can lead to suicide

Massive loss of brain cells may cause elevated levels of testosterone, according to British scientists. Researchers believe that the results of their experiment, explain a number of side effects associated with the use of anabolic steroids androgynous to increase muscle mass.

Increased excitability, irritability and aggressiveness, and suicidal tendencies are known consequences of that increase levels of testosterone, anabolic steroid.

These behavioral evidence of negative effects of steroids on brain function, says the coordinator of the research project, professor of pharmacology and psychology at Yale University, Barbara Ehrlich. Normally, testosterone plays an important role in regulating growth, development and differentiation of cells of various tissues of the body. This hormone is present in the male and in the female body, but its concentration in men more than about 10 times.

Elevated levels of testosterone increase the rate of loss of nerve cells, activating the nervous tissues of programmed cell death process - apoptosis, shown by the results of experiments conducted by scientists.

Apoptosis is characterized by disruption of the structure of cell membranes, changing membrane potentials, activation of "killer proteins" caspases and DNA fragmentation. The relatively short periods of increasing concentrations of testosterone, which had continued for 6-12 hours, during the experiment caused apoptosis in the colonies grown in vitro neuroblastoma cells of the brain. Researchers noted that normal concentrations of testosterone did not affect the cells, and elevated concentrations of female hormone estrogen even brought them a protective effect.

The processes of cell death, similar to the mechanism of apoptosis of neuroblastoma cells, recorded during the experiment, are observed in brain tissue of patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's and other degenerative diseases of the CNS. Reportedly Izvestia
