April 28 2008

Remuneration, social status and praise activate the same brain area, found the Japanese and American scientists. According to them, the pleasure center in the structure called the striatum (striatum).

Scientists from the Japan National Institute of Physiology (Japanese National Institute for Physiological Sciences) conducted a series of experiments with 19 volunteers. Initially, the participants played in the heat of the game. At the same time they were fixed brain activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the website MedNovosti.

In the second experiment, participants completed a questionnaire and talked about his short video. After some time, be informed about the ratings and comments to the videos made by strangers. The reaction of the participants are also being tracked by fMRI.

Turned out that the money prize (in the first experiment), and the compliments of strangers (in the second experiment) caused increased activity of the striatum. The fact that monetary and social "reward" affect the same reward center helps to explain the essence of the phenomenon of altruism, said study leader Norihiro Sadat.

The second study was conducted by researchers led by Caroline Zink (Caroline Zink) from the National Institute of Mental Health (USA). 72 volunteers played an interactive computer game for money. Depending on their success rate ratings of players, from time to time were shown to participants. Thus, scientists created an artificial social hierarchy.

It turned out that monetary gain and social status of activated the pleasure center in the striatum, said Zink.
