Poland did not give my heart a composer Chopin scholar

July 26 2008

Polish authorities refused to provide the heart of composer Frederic Chopin to a genetic test. Researchers have sought permission to explore the heart of Chopin, as they have a suspicion that in fact the composer died of cystic fibrosis and not tuberculosis, as stated in the official death certificate. Buried the composer in general in France - at the Pere Lachaise cemetery.

However, by the will of the composer, his heart was placed in a column of the Church of the Holy Cross in Warsaw. The representative of the Polish Ministry of Culture said that following consultations with experts officials decided that the prospect of a new diagnosis does not justify the study.

According to the head of Frederick Chopin Society in Warsaw Grzhegozha Michalski, coinciding with the opinion of most experts, research scientists did not bring any significant contribution to the study and assessment of creativity and personality of Chopin, but is directed only to satisfy curiosity. In addition, he said that scientists could not prove the likelihood of successful diagnosis.

Scientists partly agree with Michalski, but argue that for cystic fibrosis show many symptoms, such as infectious diseases of the airways and lungs. In addition, cystic fibrosis became known science much later than 1849, when Chopin died. According to one of the researchers, if researchers can prove that Chopin suffered from cystic fibrosis, it will give hope to many people suffering from the disease, writes AP.
