Found ocular prosthesis aged 4800 years

December 23 2006

Recently, during excavations in Iran, held under the British program Circle of Ancient Iranian Studies under the direction of archaeologist Mansur Sayyed-Sayadi, was found the skeleton of a young woman who lost her eyes instead of being inserted unusual prosthesis.

Find dating back 4800 years. Researchers believe that the artificial eyeball was made from natural resins, which have added animal fats. A lot of fine gold thread mimic eye capillaries, and a couple of holes on each side were used for fixing an artificial eye in its socket.

Markers of living tissue on an artificial eye indicate that the woman has developed an inflammation of the contact with the prosthesis. When this woman died, she was 25-30 years, scientists say. It is assumed that the dead woman belonged to the elite, as evidenced by the thoroughness with which the ancient doctors have prepared unusual transactions. Together with the skeleton in the grave, women were found clay vessels, bronze mirrors, leather bags and jewelry, reports Discovery.
