Open technology for producing images using a liquid lens and sound

September 23 2008

Scientists developed a revolutionary technology for producing images using a vibration of water under the action of sound, which will create more light, cheap and efficient camera, said in an article published by American physicists in the journal Nature Photonics.

"The great achievement of the new technology is that optical images can be obtained by using a liquid lens and source. No one has done this until now," - said study leader Hirsi Amir (Amir H. Hirsa) from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (NY York) was quoted as saying in the message of the institute.

Scientists have made a liquid lens by placing two drops of water in a cylindrical hole. With the sound they made water fluctuate, which allowed us to obtain a lens with a permanent change in focal length.

Special computer software can select those images that are in focus, which allows to receive the flow of clear images at 250 frames per second.

"This lens is easy to use, consumes very little power and almost always in focus - no matter near or far the object is. There is no need for a strong source of energy or exotic mechanisms of activation. This lens is easy to build into a large number of appliances and fixtures "- says Dr. Hirsi.

Previously, scientists have already worked with liquid lenses, but they still changed the focal length by increasing or decreasing the surface area of the site of contact with the liquid. This required a lot of energy and it was unprofitable.

The camera, which can produce a new technology is cheap, does not require large amounts of energy and light weight. According to Dr. Hirsi, it should appeal to many - from manufacturers of cell phones and car manufacturers to remotely controlled devices.
