People can "take the mark" as a dog

December 19 2006

With proper training people can go by smell, such as service dogs, found U.S. scientists. A team of researchers from the University of California under the leadership of Jess Porter and Noam Sobel conducted an experiment, which was attended by 32 people.

Test subjects were asked to follow the ten-track smell chocolate essence, relying solely on its own scent. Coped with the task of two-thirds of the subjects. To determine how education affects the development of their abilities, volunteers trained by 3 times during three days in a two-week period.

The subjects, after such a procedure really became "take the footprint more accurately and confidently. The experiment has helped shed light on how mammals sniff. For a long time, biologists have argued about whether the animals compare the smell coming to each nostril, to see where it goes.

Other creatures such as lobsters, respond to odors with the help of special antennas, so some scientists believed that mammals the nostrils are too close to each other to work the same way. Volunteers, which closes one nostril, showed much poorer results than those who were involved in both. It turned out that all living beings is one mechanism of olfaction. Scientists in the future are going to teach the subjects to follow the scent on two legs. Tells Kompyulenta
