Carbon dioxide threatens Earth irreversible changes

November 19 2008

U.S. scientists have warned that in the near future to begin irreversible climate changes due to the fact that the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has passed the "point of no return."

Humanity is faced with the expansion of deserts, reduced harvests, increasing strength of hurricanes, the reduction of coral reefs and the disappearance of glaciers that provide water to hundreds of millions of people.

To prevent abrupt warming in the coming years, researchers say, the concentration of carbon dioxide should be reduced to the level that existed before the industrial age - up to 350 parts per million (0,035%), reports RIA Novosti .

Now the carbon dioxide concentration is 385 parts per million and increasing by 2 million shares (0.0002%) per annum, mainly due to fossil fuel burning and deforestation.
