November 19 2008

Astronauts Heidemarie Stefanishen-Piper and Steve Bowen completed the main objectives of the first spacewalk of the current flight of space shuttle Endeavour to the ISS, a spokesman Space Center of NASA's Johnson in Houston (Texas) Kyle Herring.

"Astronauts complete spacewalk, they have completed all scheduled tasks. Now Stefanishen Piper quits rotating mechanism with thermal solar panels. Once this is completed, the astronauts will gather the tools and headed for the airlock," - said the source. In outer space, astronauts have already spent about 6.5 hours. With the onset of pressure equalization in the lock chamber officially completed spacewalk.

The objectives of the astronauts was to move empty containers from the nitrogen-storage platform number three at the ISS the shuttle cargo bay for the eventual return to Earth. Also on the platform was moved to the equipment that the shuttle delivered to the ISS. Itself, the main task, which is given special attention during the current four planned spacewalks will be the replacement of the mechanisms responsible for the rotation of the solar panels. Due to these adaptations solar panels are rotated so as to collect the maximum amount of sunlight.

On the whole "space walk" was held without incident, apart from the fact that Piper has lost a bag with tools, said Hering. About 15.33 Eastern Time U.S. (23.33 GMT) Stefanishen Heidemarie Piper reported that the grease from the grease gun got into the tool kit.
