Scientists have observed the birth of the cosmic radiation

November 16 2006

NASA scientists using the Chandra Observatory, found new evidence that cosmic rays, particles, traveling in space and hits the ground, are generated by shock waves in supernova remnants.

Cosmic radiation is a charged electrons, protons and ions. Experts have used Chandra to study X-rays emanating from the electrons (electrons are the only particles that emit X-rays). Experts explore the area Cassiopeia A, which is a supernova remnant age of 325 years.

The emission arises from the waves formed by the explosion of stars, called supernovae, scientists have long believed. They are one of the few places in the galaxy, where there is enough energy to accelerate these particles, said Michael Stage, an astronomer at the University of Massachusetts. Tells
