"Eternal" Arctic ice melt in 2040

December 12 2006

By 2040, the Arctic ice during the summer months melt almost completely. The study warns that if not now take decisive action, the adverse climate change is unavoidable.

With the help of computer models, scientists have tried to predict the future state of the ice near the northern coast of Canada. In 2040, in the late summer months, according to one such model, retaining only a small part of the eternal ice at the north coast of Canada and Greenland.

One of the study participants, McGill University professor Bruno Tremblay noted that the open water absorbs more sunlight than ice. Land Ocean, freed from the ice cover, only further stimulate the process of climate warming. The professor said that it will dramatically accelerate the process of climate change. Model projections suggest that in 20 years the rate of reduction of Arctic ice will increase by 4 times.

Professor Michael Byers of the University of British Columbia in June of this year, warned that 25 years from the melting ice in the Arctic is so intense that the famous Northwest Passage along the northern coast of Canada will be free of ice in the summer months. According to the forecast Roshe Andre, head of research group on board the Canadian research icebreaker Amundsen, waterways along the northern coast of Canada will be open for navigation through half a century.
