The hole above the Earth has grown to record size

October 8 2006

Size of the ozone hole over Antarctica set a new record, said the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), UN. According to recent measurements, carried out by NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) at the end of September 2006, the size of "crack" in the ozone layer protects the Earth from space radiation, increased to 29.5 square kilometers. This is 10 square meters more than the previous record set in 2000.

Also, according to the same report of the WMO, the average thickness of the ozone layer of the planet has reached a minimum in the history of these observations: lack of ozone in the atmosphere at present is 39.8 megatons.

Deformation of the protective layer of the Earth's atmosphere caused by the presence in it of the critical number of greenhouse gases and substances that deplete the ozone. According to forecasts of WMO, in spite of all measures taken, within at least another 20 years, the ozone hole over the land will continue to grow, reports Reuters.
