Marijuana leads to ectopic pregnancy

August 4 2006

Smoking marijuana before or after conception prevents embryo implantation in the uterus and can lead to ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage. Normally, after fertilization fissile embryo begins to move through the tube toward the uterus.

Getting into its cavity, it is embedded in the mucosa. The main ingredient in marijuana - tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) breaks this process, scientists have found from Vanderbilt University after conducting research on mice.

During the experiments Haybin Wang and his colleagues injected female mice different substances - THC, the other components of marijuana, or placebo - for 4-5 days. Drugs were administered during the period between fertilization and implantation of the embryo in the lining of the uterus.

The results showed that none of the females treated with THC, there was no embryo implantation in the uterus. In animals injected with other substances, or placebo, the conception was not violated, informed scientists.

As the researchers said, the basis of this process is the ability to interact with THC receptors CB1 and CB2, are present in various human cells and are also available in the embryo. During normal conception to receptors CB1 and CB2 embryo attached substances produced in the body female - anandamide.

Despite the fact that the experiments were conducted on animals, their results "have important clinical implications for women, said Wang. Future studies will show whether there is a similar process in the human body, but now scientists have warned: women who become pregnant should avoid marijuana use, write podrobnosti
