December 26 2006

Last night from the Baikonur cosmodrome launched rocket Proton-K immediately with three modernized navigation satellites for the GLONASS system. Devices successfully placed into orbit and transmitted to control the customer.

Three satellites Glonass-M "displayed on the transfer orbit. In the future, satellites will operate with ground automatic ", - reported in Roskosmos.

Recall that to date in the Russian navigation system has 10 working satellites. In order for their signals are continuously received throughout our country, the number of operational satellites of the GLONASS system should be 18. For continuous reception of signals of GLONASS global need to bring the orbital system to its full strength - 24 satellites.

Recall also that the GLONASS system was developed and commissioned for the Ministry of Defence in the early 1980's. The system is designed for navigation support of military and civilian users: GLONASS satellites continuously transmit information on the exact coordinates of ground, sea, air and space objects, and the accuracy ahead of U.S. rival - GPS.

It is planned that the "construction" GLONASS orbital constellation will be fully completed by 2009. By early 2008, the orbit must be at least 18 operating satellites, which in 2007 is scheduled to launch into orbit 6 satellites GLONASS-M.
